New 2025 Tariffs & You

Maggie Mildenberger

As you may have seen in the news President Trump issued an executive order on February 1st which levies a new 10% tariff on items made in China. This order also states that “de minimis” treatment is no longer available for items made in China.

De Minimis treatment allows for shipments under $800 in value, being sent to an individual consumer, to avoid duty and tax assessments.

If you order from sites like Shein, Temu, Ali Express, etc – these smaller value shipments will now be subject to duty and tax assessments. They can be taxed at the normal duty rate + 25% + 10%.

Tariffs are assessed when the shipment clears the border and US Customs. Items ordered but not yet through customs could be affected by new tariffs.

If you have any questions about how the tariffs will be navigated for hospitality projects, your best resource is the vendor you are ordering the goods from. We are continuing to monitor this situation closely, and will provide updates as they become available.
